Anorexia nervosa affects mainly women between the ages of 12 and 25 in upper and middle class families and has increased over the past 20 years. Individuals with anorexia nervosa may also be socially withdrawn, irritable and moody and do usually also display symptoms of depression. Many people with eating disorders use abnormal eating habits in means of handling stress and anxiety. Suffers of anorexia nervosa usually have a low self-esteem, feelings of helplessness and a fear of becoming fat. They also rarely break rules or disobey, are often self contained meaning that they often keep their feeling to themselves and tend to be perfectionists, good students or excellent athletes. It is believed that many restrict food to gain a sense of control on their lives meaning that their control on their weight means that they are taking control of their bodies and gain approval from others.
